We are proudly now supported in our operating costs by The Canterbury Community Trust. Their kind donation of $10,000 towards the daily running of CYC will immeasurably help us in what we do. Thank you so much! We have been given approximately $2300 to use for events by the Winter Chill events fund - we're super happy to have this surprise donation and we're going to use it to find a great way to add value to what we do!

CYC got in on the Long Term Plan public consultations being run by both ECAN and CCC regarding their future plans for Chch. Read what we had to say to CCC here and here. Our submissions whizz James put the document together based on consultation with groups of young people at a Youth Voice Canterbury Youth Connect event, in person at schools and via an online survey. We also partnered with Student Volunteer Army for this one. James and Jack then spoke to this submission at the CCC public hearings! It was great to see the Councillors engage in the type of witty banter James is perfect at. Well done to Jack for giving every Councillor the winning smile!
We had a brilliant and very special time this past weekend with members from Sensational Selwyn Youth and Hurunui Youth Programme and assorted other peeps at our Brick by Brick Youth Leaders' Hui.
There was a leadership workshop, current affairs speed dating, a digital scavenger hunt, events ideation thinking time from our friend Catarina at Ministry of Awesome and a fantastic final talk with SVA co-founder and Youthink maestro Jason Pemberton, all topped off with heaps of amazing food and a fair bit of sneaking around the Issac Theatre Royal. Massive thanks to our sponsors Ministry of Youth Development - New Zealand and friends at Leadership Lab for helping us make this happen! We're also really happy that the 'Turtle of Leadership' made it onto a t-shirt for all attendees. Thank you to Josiah's dad for drawing a really beautiful design which captures the work done in the leadership workshop. To see the Scavenger Hunt funtimes, check out:https://www.facebook.com/groups/bxbscavengers/ On Friday the 29th of May we hosted our annual Wespeak, and for the first year we were independent! We had a small and passionate crowd of young people from a wide range of schools all with heaps of energy. We had a heap of awesome speakers including: Chris Gallavin from The University Of Canterbury, Cashmere High Schools Eco Driver And a group of girls who visited Nepal from Christchurch Girls High School. We also had some awesome 5 minute talks from Sela from the CPIT and a talk from Hon Amy Adams MP and our very own Beth Walters inspiring words. Our 1 hour workshops consisted of A Brave New City, Henry Sunderland a Gnomologist and Attitude ! We loved seeing you all, hearing what you were passionate about and sharing this inspiring day with you all :) We loved meeting you all at our Stage Challenge Face to Face event, from the opportunity for Kaitlyn to speak on stage to all your interest in the ' great flag debate'. To debrief quickly, we gained heaps more youth signups on our mailing list (which we are super excited about) and a lot of discussion and strong opinion with our three hot topics about: the flag and whether we should change it, speed limits on country roads and construction in regards to the new stadium and convention centre. Check out our summary from the flag debate below.

Seeing as we're about to sign a pretty historic document with Christchurch City Council, we thought we'd let you know in plain English what a Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U.) actually is/does/means:
Alice (Chair) and James (Secretary) are scribbling away at a speech for the signing, which is happening tomorrow at the Council building. We promise we'll have the photos up here ASAP! Kaitlyn, our Deputy Chair and Media Officer, is currently working on a press release to get out to the media and beyond. We're going to have that thing fine-tuned and on this blog later on next week, so you can find out what went down at the signing, who said what, and how this whole thing came about.
Stay tuned, Chch! We almost managed to get everyone in the same room, but not quite. Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, here are your Christchurch Youth Council Executive Committee for 2015:
Alice Ridley (Chairperson) Kaitlyn White (Deputy Chairperson) James Adams (Secretary) Charlotte Ross (Treasurer) Alison Faulls Liam Stretch Madicyn Leckey-Hinde Isla Evison Charmaine Cameron George Mander Jakob Callender Savannah Pedofsky Katy Neale Quinn McNab Sophie Mills Jack Kennedy Our Executive Committee will joined in their work by a number of members (we currently have 13 Members at the moment!) who will assist on various projects throughout the year. We're totally thrilled to have their support and it means everything to know that CYC is growing bigger through their involvement. At that AGM, we also debuted our Annual Report 2014. After a mad rush around town getting it printed on the day of our meeting, we ended up with a pretty plush end product thanks to CQ in Addington.Telling the story of our year, it was a collaboration between all of the Youth Councillors, with a bit of stitching help from our employee. We're stoked that it's already been used as a template by Waimak Youth Council, and we've picked up some useful ideas from the way they interpreted it for their own purposes! You can read the electronic copy of our Annual Report 2014 here! YC's Alison and Hamish (before leaving us...sob!) travelled to the North Island on 16th-19th November to do some serious thinking about local government at the LocalNZ workshop.
In collaboration with other young people aged 18-25, their work culminated in a presentation given at Parliament (Hamish is at 22:10 and Alison is at 26:50) and the creation of a rather pretty-looking report which is available online now at: http://mcguinnessinstituteblog.org/2014/12/19/a-youth-statement-on-regional-goals-available-online/ |
